Abstract
Plant parasitic nematodes are soil-borne pathogens that cause yield loss and decreased tuber quality in potato tubers in storage areas. Nematodes, carried to storage with potato tubers harvested from infected areas, continue to reproduce in an unsuitable storage environment, causing economic losses in tubers. The most important plant parasitic nematodes found in potato storage areas can be listed as: Potato Rot nematode (Ditylenchus destructor), Root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.), and Cyst nematodes (Globodera spp). Meloidgoyne chitwoodi causes yield loss and a decrease in chip quality, especially in industrial varieties. The Potato Golden Cyst nematode, Globodera rostochiensis, which is under quarantine, causes yield loss and can spread to different regions with soil particles on seed potatoes. G. rostochiensis, thanks to its resistant cyst form, can survive in the soil for 10-30 years, continuing to feed on plants of the Solanaceae family when they are planted. In Turkey, where potato farming is intensive, the lack of effective chemical control methods for G. rostochiensis is a concern for sustainable potato farming. This study focuses on harmful plant parasitic nematodes in storage, their importance, their effects on yield losses, and control strategies.
